BRUCELLOSIS DISEASE – Over 6,000 got tested positive for brucellosis in China as per Lanzhou government, what should we know about this?

China’s Lanzhou, through a press conference, reported over 6000 people got infected by bacterial disease called brucellosis. This is following a year of leak incident in a vaccine plant. An outbreak in China of this disease happened amid the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus. They tested 55,725 people in the city where 6,620 have tested positive for brucellosis.

Brucellosis is caused by a group of bacteria from the genus Brucella to which a human can be infected by having a direct contact with an infected animal. It affects sheep, goats, cattle, swine and dogs which they can spread to humans while it is rare that a human-to-human transmission will happen.

The most common way to be infected by this bacteria is through eating or drinking unpasteurized and raw dairy products and through air. What happened in China? Way back 2019, students from Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute tested positive and by the end of the year, the number of infected persons reached 181.

Reportedly, the outbreak originated at a biopharmaceutical factory which is owned by Shanghai-listed China Animal Husbandry Industry Co. As per Channel News Asia, the factory used expired disinfectants in making vaccines for the said disease in July to August 2019.

The bacteria was left in waste gas and since it can infect one through air, it led to an outbreak. As per Health Line, the symptoms is the same with having a flu which include:

  • appetite loss
  • back pain
  • chills
  • lethargy
  • headaches
  • pain in the abdomen
  • pain in the joints
  • fever that comes and goes
  • weight loss
